ATLÉTICO DE MADRID
Atlético de Madrid ended 7th in the exciting Primera División and just missed out on direct UEFA Cup participation for next year. Atlético Madrid will be playing in the Intertoto Cup on July 21st/22nd and 28 th/29th to qualify for the UEFA Cup. In the process of further strengthening the team Atlético Madrid signed a.o. world-class striker and 2005 European topscorer Diego Forlán. Furthermore Liverpool midfielder Luis García returns to his old love Atlético Madrid.
The club has won both the Spanish League and the Copa del Rey on nine occasions, including a double in 1996. They also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962 and were European Cup runners-up and Intercontinental Cup winners in 1974. Last year was a very dissappointing year for Atlético Madrid. So for the 2006/07 season the club has taken over the Mexican coach Javier Aguirre from Osasuna, with which he qualified for the Champions League. Furthermore, in 2006 the Portuguese international Maniche and the Argentine forward Sergio Agüero also joined the club, which improved the quality of the team.
The International Event Partnership is delighted to invite Atlético Madrid back to the Amsterdam Tournament after they last participated in 1999. The tournament will be a good opportunity for the side from Madrid to measure with European top-teams again. The Spanish would definitely love to book their first international success of the season in Amsterdam and take the trophy back to Madrid.
